Visualize the Data

Welcome back! In the last activity, you and your group made hypotheses about what elements make a successful movie.

First, you read a list of movie scenarios.

Then, you inferred which would be the most successful and least successful movies.

In this activity, you will test the hypotheses you and your group members made.

To do this you will analyze data about past movies.

Then, you will create a graph to visualize the data.

Spreadsheets make it easier to make predictions, solve problems, and draw conclusions about data.

They help you visualize data using graphs and conditional formatting.

And spreadsheets also help you make calculations or create summaries of data.

In this case, you will use the spreadsheet to compare the profitability of different movie directors, genres, and actors.

In this activity, you and your group will: examine the relationship between a movie's budget and its profitability, look at a distribution of movie budgets, and investigate how much money movies typically earn.

Visualizing data helps you identify patterns and evaluate your hypotheses about what makes a profitable movie.

In the next activities, you will use what you learned about the successes and failures of real movies to select a movie from your proposal list.

By the end of this activity, you will not have every answer about what makes a movie profitable.

That's okay! Even movie executives do not have a formula for producing a great movie.

If it were that simple, every movie would be wildly successful! Instead, collecting and analyzing data helps you test your hypotheses and inform your decision-making.

Ultimately, though, the decisions are yours! To start, have one group member open the starter project linked on this page and make a copy.

Rename it, and share it with your group.
