In this video, you will identify three to five locations in your community that are important to you.

Then you will add them to your map.

When you create a custom map, you get to decide how to represent your community.

Maps contain a lot of information and sometimes places get left out.

You can highlight lesser known places and help others reimagine the place where you live.

To begin, search for the city or town that will be the focus of your map.

If you’re creating a map of your own hometown, think about your community and what locations you’d like to see featured on your map.

If you know something is missing from a local map, this is your chance to add it.

Locations you choose might include: murals and street art, community meeting spots, historical sites, and festival and event locations significant to your culture.

You can also include other personally relevant locations that might not be represented on a map.

For example, you can add a street corner where you first learned to ride a bike or a field you remember playing in as a kid.

Your classmates may choose to include different locations on their maps than what you’ve included because they come from other neighborhoods or have different cultural backgrounds.

Next, search for your first location on the map.

Many locations will appear when you search for them by name and location.

If the location appears when you search for it, select it and add it to your map with a marker.

A marker is a symbol that indicates a location on a map.

If the location does not appear after searching for it by name, search for it by address, if you know it.

Type in the street address or a nearby intersection, and add a marker.

You can also move the map around to find the exact location you want to add.

Navigate to the street or intersection of a location to add a marker this way.

Then, rename the marker to describe what is at the location.

Choose a name that explains exactly what you want others to know about this location.

For example, your location may be a train station, but you may want to focus on the mural that’s painted there.

Rename the location to show what you want to focus on and save it.

Continue adding and renaming locations on the map until you have at least three.

If you need help finding locations, open a new tab in your browser and search online.

Or, visit the Google Arts and Culture website.

In your browser, navigate to "artsandculture.google.com" Check out the places nearby to get some ideas of cultural locations in your community.

You may need to give permission to allow the website to know your location.

If you make a mistake when adding a location to your map or decide that you want to include a different location instead, delete your marker.
