Welcome to Women’s History.

In this unit, you will explore the remarkable contributions of women in world history.

Women have played a huge role in the progress of society throughout history, from championing equal political and legal rights to advancing the arts and sciences.

Women's history is celebrated each March and highlights the accomplishments of women around the world.

However, the contributions of women have not always been widely recognized.

In the United States, women’s roles in history were still not commonly included in textbooks or taught in public schools by the 1970s.

In 1978, dozens of schools in California created special programs for a Women’s History Week.

The idea soon spread to classrooms and communities across the country.

Female activists lobbied for national recognition, and in 1980 President Jimmy Carter declared that the week of March 8th would be celebrated as National Women’s History Week.

The presidential proclamation stated that "the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well.” Support grew nationwide, and finally, in 1987, Congress officially declared March as National Women’s History Month.

International Women’s Day, which has been celebrated worldwide for over a hundred years, honors the achievements of women every March 8th.
