Gemini Overview
Gemini is Google’s most versatile AI assistant. It is a multimodal space where you can interact using text, images, video or voice.
Think of Gemini as your assistant; its real strength is how quickly it takes over the heavy lifting of planning and preparing for your classes by:
Helping in Scaffolding: It can break down a big chapter into simple, step-by-step guides in seconds.
Catering to All Learning Levels: You can take a long, difficult paragraph and ask Gemini to make the language much simpler.
Creating Fun Examples Instantly: It can quickly create daily-life examples or analogies to connect hard topics with what your students already love.
Gemini functions as a co-designer to enhance instruction and professional work. Let’s take a look at some of its features.
Maximising Gemini
While Gemini is designed to understand natural language, you will get the most effective results by moving beyond simple one-sentence requests for your initial prompt. To help you craft well-defined instructions, we use the PARTS framework to build prompts from scratch:
Persona: Identify who you are or the role the AI should take.
Aim: State your objective clearly—what exactly do you want to achieve?
Recipients: Specify your audience, such as first-year college students or a primary classroom.
Theme: Describe the desired style or tone, like "analytical and formal" or "humorous and engaging".
Structure: Note the format you expect, such as a bulleted list, a rubric, or a 30-second script.
Safe & Responsible Use
While these capabilities are transformative, they require your professional oversight. Because the AI predicts the "most likely" next step, it can reflect human biases or even "hallucinate" facts. Google’s AI Principles require a human-in-the-loop approach: the AI provides the first draft, but you leverage your expertise to make the final decision.

Demo
Let’s take a common topic: The Greenhouse Effect, and see how Gemini handles lesson design for K12 as well as higher education.
Practice
Now it’s your turn. Let's put Gemini to work on that one difficult topic in your syllabus - that one heavy concept where your students always get stuck or lose interest.
Your task:
Access: Open gemini.google.com.
The reframe prompt: Ask Gemini to take that difficult concept and "Explain it in three different ways: as a story, as a step-by-step process, and as a visual representation."
The scaffold prompt: Ask Gemini to “Create a set of sentence starters to help a student begin an essay on this topic.” or “Generate a structured rubric for a 1,000-word essay on this topic.”
Refine: ‘Talk back’ to Gemini. Try: "That’s a bit too formal. Make it more conversational and engaging for my students."
Reflection
In this session, we've seen that Gemini isn't just a chatbot; it’s an engine for high-quality instruction.
Let’s reflect on your practice:
Reflecting on your classroom experience, how can using Gemini help your students better grasp complex concepts and bridge the gap between abstract textbook theories and their everyday lives?
