Support Your Hypotheses with Data

In this video, you will gather with your group to analyze and discuss the data for each of the movies you thought would be successful.

You will use the hypotheses you made and the data patterns you discovered to choose the one movie your group wants to produce.

Make sure that one group member has the movie scenarios document and the movie data spreadsheet open on their computer.

Each group member should have added data analysis points about their movie under Initial Thoughts.

Use these points to discuss each movie individually.

Then, choose the movie you want to produce together.

Use whatever methods you need to make your group decision.

The data may convince everyone in the group to choose one movie over the others.

Or, you may disagree about which movie to produce.

You could create a pros and cons list and discuss until come to a consensus.

Or maybe you take a vote and the majority rules.

Just make sure that you use the data patterns you found to support your decision.

The goal of this activity is to select the most profitable movie-- not for your movie to win.

In order to make an objective decision, use the data to defend your decision.

What patterns the data suggest that this will be a profitable movie?

But data is only part of the decision-making process.

Maybe your group really wants to produce a comedy, but the data shows that horror films do better.

Why do you like the comedy?

Does the storyline seem compelling?

Does it seem like a film that lots of people would like?

How would you defend your reasoning to a board of directors?

In the next activities, your group will explain how you used your own intuition and the data to come to your decision.

When the group decides which movie to greenlight, insert a horizontal line at the top of the document.

Above the line, type the title of the movie you selected.

Then, add at least three bullet points about how the data supports your decision.

Now, it's your turn: Gather with your group and present your findings from your movie.

Tell your group about the patterns you found in the data and compare those with the initial thoughts you had about the movie.

Decide as a group which movie you want to greenlight.

Draw a horizontal line at the top of the movie ideas document and type the title of the one movie your group selected.

Include at least three bullet points about how the data supports your decision-- or why you think your intuition is greater than the data.

You will use these points in the last activity to make your pitch to the executive board.

When you've finished, return to your own computer to wrap up this activity.
