Choose an Image
Transcript
Most digital memes use both images and text to create meaning.
In this video, you will choose an image that represents your topic and add it to your meme.
The image you select for your meme will be the first thing people see when they open or share your meme.
Choosing the right image will make your meme funny, clever, or memorable, so people will be more likely to understand the subject and want to share it with others.
To begin, search for an image about your topic.
Find an image that relates to your topic in a surprising or unusual way.
Picking a surprising image will help you visually comment or joke about your topic, and make it memorable.
Or, use irony to make the meme funnier.
“Irony” is a difference between what you say and what you mean.
In an “ironic” meme, the image and text may not be related at all, and the humor comes from putting them together.
For example, you might use an animal, an artwork, or a baby to say something about a serious topic, like a historical event or a recent news story.
Or, choose an image that creates a metaphor between your topic and something else.
A “metaphor” is a creative way of comparing two things.
The two items might not seem alike at first, but comparing them shows you something new.
For example, when discussing a historical figure, you could use a photo of them in the meme.
To create a metaphor instead, search for an image of a celebrity to make a comparison or joke.
Think about what kinds of images might represent your idea.
Experiment with creative search terms until you find an image that helps you make a statement about your topic.
Select only images that you have the right to use.
