Whether it’s all of your test scores for a year-long class or daily temperatures over the course of a month, data becomes even more useful when you look at it over a set period of time.

But just a list of test scores or temperatures doesn’t tell you enough.

Using statistics and data analysis can help you see any patterns that may exist and understand the data better.

You may even be able to make predictions about the topic based on your current data, like what the temperature a week from now might be.

One way to make meaning out of your data is to find the median, mean, or mode.

These are single numbers reached by analyzing data in specific ways.

In this lesson, you will choose whether to find the median, mean, or mode of a list of numbers, or your teacher may assign you one to work on.

You can even find all three if you choose.

The median is the middle number in a list of numbers that have been arranged in order.

The mean is the average of a group of numbers, and the mode is the number that occurs most often.

Using Google Sheets to find the median, mean, or mode allows you to sort your data the way you need it and even use functions if you are working with a lot of numbers.

To find the median, mean or mode, you will be using a starter data set with daily temperatures, but you can also complete this lesson with data your teacher assigns or from a textbook.

This lesson uses Google Sheets, but you could apply these skills and concepts in most other spreadsheet applications or even on a piece of paper.

As you complete this project in Google Sheets, you will: Create and title a new spreadsheet, Type data into a spreadsheet, Sort the spreadsheet, And use functions.

To work on this lesson, sign in to your Google account.

Open a new tab in your browser, and navigate to Google.com.

If you are not signed in, do so now.

If you do not have a Google account, pause the video and create one now.

To begin, open Google Drive.

Create a new spreadsheet and rename it with what you are finding.

Then, depending on what that is, move on to the video that describes the concepts of mode, median, or mean.

Now, it’s your turn: Create a new spreadsheet in Google Sheets, And rename it with what you are finding.

Instructions

  1. Create a new spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
  2. Rename it with what you are finding.
