People write songs for many different reasons.

Writing is a fun way to capture moments throughout your life that are meaningful to you.

Often, musicians and songwriters express themselves and send powerful messages through their music and lyrics.

Throughout history, people have written songs and used music, dance, poetry, and singing as ways to communicate and build a community.

For example, music is used at sporting events to get the fans and athletes pumped up...

...Parents sing lullabies to soothe their children to sleep...

...And the lyrics of protest songs were often used to unite people in a common cause.

As a songwriter, you too can put your thoughts and feelings to music to express yourself to others.

The songs you write can express things like happiness, anger, love, frustration, and other emotions.

In this lesson, you will write the lyrics, or words, to your own song to express yourself and share your experiences.

The great thing about writing a song is that there’s no right or wrong way to do it.

Your song doesn’t need to be long or even rhyme, and it’s o-k if you’re not sure yet what beat you’d like to use.

You may even want to use a song you already know and rewrite it with your own unique lyrics.

As you complete this project, you will: Create and title a document, Choose what you’d like your song to be about and plan the lyrics, Write the verses of your song, Write the chorus of your song, And add a song title.

This lesson uses Google Docs, but you could apply these skills and concepts using any word processing application, or even an old-fashioned pencil and paper.
