Introduction to the Topics
Transcript
In this lesson, you will explore a topic in Latinx or Hispanic history and culture that you're interested in.
Latinx is one of several terms used (mostly in the United States) to refer to people from Latin American cultures.
It's used as a gender-neutral or non-binary alternative to Latino and Latina.
The term Hispanic describes people who speak Spanish or are descended from Spanish-speaking communities.
People may use any of these terms to describe themselves or people from these cultures.
For this project, you will choose a topic related to Latinx or Hispanic culture, which could mean studying a Latinx or Hispanic person who has achieved greatness.
Latinx and Hispanic people have made important contributions in many different areas, such as...
becoming award-winning actors, painting classic works of art, traveling to space, becoming Grammy-award-winning musical artists, serving on the Supreme Court, and becoming football stars.
For your project, you might also decide to explore a social movement or event that impacted the lives of Latinx or Hispanic people.
For example, throughout the 1960s and 70s, many Hispanic activists fought to improve working conditions for migrant farm workers in what became known as the Farmworkers' Movement.
They engaged in non-violent labor strikes and other peaceful protests to demand better treatment for farm workers.
As a result of this movement, many farms established better pay and working conditions for their workers.
To recognize the achievements of Latinx and Hispanic people and their cultures, September 15th to October 15th is officially designated as National Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States.
But you can celebrate Latinx and Hispanic history and culture any time of the year.
For this lesson, choose one topic related to Latinx or Hispanic history and culture that interests you.
You might choose to research a person in the present day or in the past, or an event, or even an artistic work of Latinx or Hispanic artist.
You can also explore something or someone from your everyday life.
You might create a project about a Latinx artist's painting in a local museum, a community event that celebrates Hispanic culture, or a Latinx or Hispanic person you admire in your school or community.
