In this lesson, you will explore a topic in Black history that you’re interested in.

For example, you might decide to study an African American who has achieved greatness in the United States or all over the world.

African Americans have made important contributions in many different areas, such as...

Acting in blockbuster films, Writing Pulitzer Prize-winning novels, Traveling to space, Serving on the Supreme Court, Winning multiple Grammy Awards, And becoming world-record-holding Olympic champions.

For your project, you might also decide to explore a movement or event that changed the course of Black history in the past, or one that made history recently.

For example, throughout the 1950s and 60s, many African Americans fought to end racial discrimination in what became known as the Civil Rights Movement.

They engaged in marches, sit-ins, and other peaceful protests to demand equal rights and social justice.

But the contributions of African Americans have not always been recognized.

To help change this, February is officially designated as Black History Month in the United States to celebrate Black culture and important people and events.

But you can celebrate Black history and culture any time of the year.

Take this opportunity to choose one topic related to Black history and achievements in any area that interests you.

This might be a person, an event, or even a piece of art by an African American artist.

You can also explore something or someone in the present day.

You might create a project about a Black person you admire in your school or community, a Black art exhibit in a local museum, or your favorite Black author.

You could even find out who inspired and influenced this person to do the incredible work they do.

In this lesson, you will explore whatever topic you choose, create a project about it, and present your project to your classmates.
