Use Repetition in Your Pop Art

Download and duplicate your pop art to create a new work that uses repetition.

Transcript

In this video, you will download and duplicate your pop art on a digital canvas to make a new work of pop art.

One of the techniques used in pop art is repetition.

Pop artists sometimes take an image or object and repeat it over and over in one work of art.

This creates a different effect and allows you to use more colors than in the single image you created.

To begin, open your pop art in your Drive.

Make a copy of your pop art, so you can keep your original artwork in your drive.

Then, download your artwork as a JPEG file.

A JPEG file is a common file type used for images.

Downloading your image as a JPEG file means you can use the pop art you created in a new drawing as well as in other applications.

Open your Downloads folder and move your JPEG file to your Drive.

Next, remove your pop art image and background color from the copy of your drawing.

Then, upload the JPEG file of your pop art image to start your new drawing.

Move the image to the upper left corner of the canvas and adjust its size so you can place more images of the same size on the canvas.

Choose a size that will allow you to fit number of images you want to include.

Next, duplicate the image.

Move the duplicate to another part of the canvas, so it fits next to or below the first image.

Repeat the duplicating process, moving each new image so that all of the images fit together without overlapping.

When your images are all in place, recolor each one.

Recoloring your images makes this piece of pop art unique from your original work.

You can recolor each one differently or use a pattern.

You can even use the original color for one or more of the duplicates if you choose to.

It's up to you! Now, it's your turn: make a copy of your pop art, download your image as a JPEG file, add the JPEG image to your Drive, add the JPEG image to your canvas, duplicate and format the image, and recolor each image.

Add Word Art to Your Pop Art

Add Word art to your pop art to explore another pop art technique.

Transcript

In this video, you will add word art to your pop art.

Some pop artists, such as Roy Lichtenstein, included elements of comic books, like speech bubbles, in their artwork.

Words that mimic sounds, such as "whaam" and "zoom," are common characteristics of pop art.

You can add word art to your pop art to achieve a similar effect.

To begin, open your pop art in your Drive.

Make a copy of your pop art, so you can keep your original artwork in your Drive.

Then, think of a word or phrase you can add to your art.

You might choose something humorous, realistic, powerful, or surprising.

Add the word or phrase to the copy of your pop art.

Change the font of your word art.

Try to choose a font that matches the pop art style.

For example, fonts like "Luckiest Guy" and "Bangers" achieve the comic book effect.

Next, change the fill color.

You can choose a color that contrasts with your pop art colors or a color that matches one or more of them.

Increase the border size to make your word art stand out like the letters often used in pop art.

Change the border color to create a different effect.

Then, move your word art to a place on your canvas where you think it looks most appealing or where it best adds the effect that you're trying to achieve.

You can rotate the word or phrase if you want to place it at an angle.

You can also increase or decrease the size of your word art to make it fit with the image.

You can add more word art if you would like, but try to keep the focus on the main image of your original pop art.

Now, it's your turn: make a copy of your pop art, add word art to your copy, and format your word art.

Format Your Photo to Make Photo Art

Format a photograph to create a work of photo art.

Transcript

In this video, you will create photo art with the same photo you used for your pop art.

Creating photo art is another way to creatively alter a photo.

To begin, create a new drawing in Google Drawings and rename it.

Then, insert the photo you used to create your pop art.

You can use a different photo, but using the same photo allows you and others to see how you used one image in different ways.

You can even share them as a collection! Insert the same photo and move it to the side of the canvas.

Make the photo smaller if necessary.

You can use this photo as a reference when you make changes.

You can see how much you've done to transform the photo.

Next, make adjustments to your photo.

You can make adjustments to the transparency, brightness, and contrast of your photo.

Adjusting the transparency changes how much you can see through the photo to the background.

The brightness controls how much light appears to be reflecting off objects in the photo.

And the greater the contrast, the more certain colors stand out from the other colors in the photo.

Next, add a shadow to your photo.

You can adjust the transparency of your shadow as well.

You can also change the angle of the shadow, and the distance the shadow is from the photo.

Next, adjust the blur radius.

The greater the blur radius is, the blurrier the shadow becomes.

Delete your reference photo.

You are now left with your very own photo art! Now, it's your turn: create and rename a drawing, insert a photo, make adjustments to your photo, and add a shadow.
