Research Answers to Questions You Still Have About Your Topic

Add two questions related to your topic that you want to learn more about. Research the answers to your questions.

After analyzing your topic in the main  lesson, you may have more questions and   things you want to learn more about.

For example, you may wonder…  How long the changes you observed  are expected to continue,  Or what impact the changes are  having on the local environment.  In this extension, you will add two questions to  your document about something you want to know   more about.

Then, you will research the answers  to your questions and link to the sources.  To begin, return to your document.

Add a heading after the summary.  Next, type a question you  still have about your topic.  Use the explore tool in Google  Docs to research the answer.   Type keywords from your  question into the search bar.  It’s important to use recent  information from a reliable source,   like a website that ends in dot e-d-u or dot  gov.

These are websites that are associated with   universities and government agencies, so the  information they provide is usually accurate.  Read through the source to see if you  can get an answer to your question.  Type the answer in your own  words under the question.  It’s also important to give credit to the source.   Press Control-C to copy the link  of the article and Control-V   to paste it in your document.

Next, type another question,  Research the answer,  And link to the source.  Now, it’s your turn:  Add two questions related to your topic  that you want to learn more about,  Research the answers to your questions, And include links to your sources.


Share Your Document with a Classmate

Share your document with a classmate and ask them to comment on the changes they observe in your images.

In this extension, you will share your document  with a classmate and invite them to comment on   your summary.

You can also invite them to  ask a question they have about the topic.  When you let someone else comment on your project,   it can give you a fresh perspective and  sometimes, even a new idea to think about.  To begin, return to your document.

To share it with a classmate,   first type in their email address.

Select the permission you want to use:  Editor means the person you share with can  make changes directly in your document,  Commenter allows them to make  comments, but not change the document,  And view lets them see your document only.

For this lesson, select the commenter choice.  Write a note to your classmate asking them  to type one comment saying if they agree   or disagree with your view of why the changes  took place.

They can also type a question they   might have about your topic.

Then, send the document.  Your classmate will get an email  that you sent the document.  Then, as they read it, they can  make a comment on your summary,  And ask a question.  When your classmate is finished, they can mention  you in a comment so you know they are finished.  You will also automatically get an email when  your classmate mentions you in the comment.  Read through what your classmate wrote.  Reply to their question if you know the answer or   say that you’ll get back to  them with the answer later.  Now, it’s your turn: Share your document with a classmate,  Ask them to type one comment on your summary,  Invite them to ask a question about the topic, And reply to their question.


Copy Your Images and Text into a Slide Presentation

Copy your images and text into a slide presentation and present it to the class.

In this extension, you will copy your images and  text to a presentation in Google Slides.

When   you’re finished, you can show the presentation  to your classmates and teacher, if you wish.  When you put each image and related text on a  different slide, it helps keep your information   organized as you give your presentation.

To begin, return to your document.  In your Drive, create a new  presentation and rename it.  Add a title slide, And another slide.  Then, apply a blank layout to your presentation.  Return to the document tab, right-click  on the first image, and copy it.  In the presentation tab, press Control-V  to paste the image on the slide.  Move the image where you would like it to be.  Then, add a text box to the slide.  Return to your document, select the text under  the first image, and press Control-C to copy it.  Press Control-V to paste the text in the text box.

If you’d like, make the text   bigger so it’s easier to read.

Repeat the process for the second image,  And the rest of the images.  Finally, add one more slide, And a text box.  Then, copy the summary from your document, And paste it into your presentation.  When you give your presentation, put it  into Present mode to make it easier to read.  Now, it’s your turn: Create a new slide presentation,  Add a title slide,  Copy the images and text from your  document into the presentation,  Put it in Present mode, And present it to the class.


Explore Impacts of Climate Change

Explore the impacts of climate change and create a poster in Google Drawings.

In this video, you will explore impacts of climate change in Google Earth and use Google Drawings to create a poster about what you learn. Many people think that climate change simply means that the Earth is getting warmer.

However, scientists are measuring a variety of ways that climate change is impacting the world around us beyond rising temperatures.

Satellite images and timelapses are valuable tools that allow us to visualize these changes from a different perspective and help us understand climate change in a way that statistics often can't.

To begin, navigate to your Google Drive...

...open a new drawing in Google Drawings...

...and rename it.

Next, change the background color of your drawing. Consider lighter colors that won’t distract from your images and text.

Then, add a title that lets the viewer know what the poster is about. Make the title stand out by changing your font settings...

...and adjusting the placement of your title.

Next, open a new browser tab and navigate to "earth.google.com" and check out the stories. Google Earth’s interactive stories are organized into categories.

By hovering over a story, you can see a brief description of what it includes.

Explore the offerings and choose a story that relates to the impacts of climate change.

You might explore stories that address a specific impact like rising sea levels… ...or changes in polar sea ice coverage, Or you might view a story that explores a variety of climate change impacts, including melting ice sheets, disappearing lakes, forest fires, and extreme weather events.

Once you find an impact of climate change that you would like to add to your poster, use your computer’s screenshot tool to capture an image that shows the impact.

Then, insert the image into your drawing.

Crop the image, resize it and place it where you want on the screen.

Next, add a brief caption explaining the impact the image demonstrates. Continue exploring stories to learn more about climate change and add at least one more impact to your poster.

Now, it’s your turn: Create a new drawing in Google Drawings, Change the background color, Add a title, Explore Google Earth’s stories to learn about the impacts of climate change, Add images for two different climate change impacts to your drawing, And caption your images.
