In this video, you will shade cells to represent the ships in your ocean territory.

You will then add conditional formatting to make the cells of ships that have been hit change color.

First, you will add five ships to your territory, each represented by a different number of cells.

The smallest ship should contain two cells, and the largest ship should contain six cells.

As you add ships to your territory, make sure you and your opponent can’t see each other’s computers.

Turn your screens away from each other, if necessary.

To begin, place your largest ship in your ocean territory.

Select any six cells in a horizontal or a vertical line and shade them to represent your ship.

Next, select five new cells in your territory and shade them for your next ship.

Make sure your ships are not touching or overlapping one another.

Continue placing your ships until all five ships occupy their own space in your territory.

When you are finished, your ships will take up a total of 20 cells in your spreadsheet.

To help you and your opponent keep track of which ships have been sunk during the game, add a key with the names of each ship and how many cells they contain.

You can name your ships after geographical locations, marine life, famous people, or anything you like.

Then, resize the column so that the text fits in the cells.

Next, add conditional formatting so that the cells that make up your ships change color when a ship is hit.

Conditional formatting lets you change the text style or background color of cells if they meet certain conditions; for example, if they contain a certain letter or a number.

Select every cell that makes up your ships.

Hold the “control” or “command” key to select all of those cells at once.

Create a formatting rule so that if your opponent guesses any of these cells, the cell changes color.

Add X’s to a few of the cells that make up your boats to test your conditional formatting.

Then remove the X's.

Now, it’s your turn: Select and shade cells in your territory to represent five ships, Add a ship key, And add conditional formatting to make cells change color when marked with an X.
