Choose Someone to Interview
Transcript
Before you can write interview questions, consider which field you want to learn about.
For example, if you are interested in a job in a skilled trade, you might consider interviewing a mechanic, a dental hygienist, or a plumber.
You can then ask someone you know about these jobs, such as a relative or family friend.
If they do not work in a field that interests you, they may know someone who does.
You can also ask a guidance counselor or teachers at your school.
Another option is to do an online search for a field that interests you.
Then, you can contact local companies to request an “informational interview.” An informational interview is an informal interview with someone working in a career field of interest to you.
This type of interview allows you to talk with a professional to learn what working in that field would be like.
To begin, you might make a list of potential interview subjects, since not everyone will be available.
When you make your list, add important details, including their contact information.
Then, add numbers to the list.
The first person on the list should be your top choice.
If you do not have a top choice, the numbers still help you to organize the list.
Next, call or email to request an interview about their job.
Briefly describe the purpose of your interview.
Be sure and thank them for their time.
After you have planned and arranged an interview with someone, add details, such as their name, place of business, email address, and phone number, to the top of your interview document.
If you have already included the details in your list, you can keep them and delete the details from the other potential interview subjects.
Now, it’s your turn: Choose a field of interest, Find 3 or more potential interview subjects, Make a numbered list of the candidates in your document, and add details about the person you will interview to the top of your document.
