Add Synonyms to Give Hints for Definitions
Add synonyms to your presentation as hints for the definition of vocabulary words.
Transcript
In this video, you will find synonyms for your vocabulary words and add them to slides.
You will use these slides as hints for the definitions of your vocabulary words.
When you are studying vocabulary words, such as words from a book you are reading, you should learn as much about the words as possible.
Synonyms are helpful because they might be words you are more familiar with than the vocabulary words.
Knowing the definition of a synonym can help you remember the definition of a vocabulary word.
To begin, open your flash card presentation.
Then, add a slide after your first definition slide.
Use the dictionary to find a synonym for your first word.
Add a synonym to your slide.
If there are several useful synonyms, you can add two or three to give you a better hint for the definition.
If a vocabulary word has no synonyms listed, you can use a hint from the definition instead.
Choose a word or word part that will help you remember the definition.
Continue adding slides with synonyms.
Choose the synonyms that will be most helpful to you.
If you found the best definition for one of your words with a dictionary book or other source, you can do the same for the synonyms.
A thesaurus is a book that contains synonyms.
If you used context clues to determine a definition, you can create your own hint as well.
Next, add a link to each definition slide.
After using your hint, you can make your best guess and then click the link to see the complete definition.
Then, add a link in each vocabulary slide to the slides with synonyms or hints, so you can use them when you need to.
You can practice as often as you’d like until you know the definitions.
If you use the hints you have added, you will be memorizing synonyms for the words at the same time! Now, it’s your turn: Add new slides with synonyms for your vocabulary words, Add links between your synonym and definition slides, And add links between your definition and synonym slides.
Change the Order of Your Flash Cards
Change the order of your slides to place the definitions first to help you learn your vocabulary words.
Transcript
In this video, you will change the order of your slides to use your definitions to help you practice and remember your vocabulary words.
When you are learning vocabulary words, you want to be able to know them as completely as possible.
You may have a quiz where the definition is given and you have to remember the vocabulary word that matches it.
By changing the order of your slides in a new presentation, you will be prepared for any type of vocabulary word activity.
To begin, open your flash card presentation.
Then, make a copy of your presentation and rename it.
This will give you two different sets of flash cards to use depending on your assignment or activity.
Move your first definition slide before the vocabulary word slide.
Remove the vocabulary word from the slide.
Then, change the link so you can go to the vocabulary word slide.
Make the same changes to each of your definition slides.
You can copy the link from your first definition slide and paste it into the other definition slides to save time.
Next, change the links in your vocabulary word slides.
You want to link back to the definitions so you can practice more than once if you need to.
The more times you practice learning your words, the better you will know them.
Now, it’s your turn: Move your definition slides before the vocabulary word slides that they match, And change the links in all of your slides.
Add Animations to Your Flash Cards
Add animations to your slides to make your flash cards more interactive and interesting.
Transcript
In this video, you will add animations to your vocabulary flash cards to help you practice learning the words.
An animation allows you to delay or control when text and images appear on the screen when presenting.
Animations also add movement to the text and images in your slides.
As you study vocabulary words for a book study or other purposes, you should take your time with each word.
Adding animations to your slides can help you study your flash cards at a good pace, giving you a better chance of remembering the words and their definitions.
.
To begin, open your flash card presentation.
If you have all of your text in one text box, decide which parts of your slide you want to animate at different times.
For example, you might want the vocabulary word separate from the example sentence.
Use a new text box for each part you want to separate.
Move any text boxes you create to align them with the rest of the text in the slide.
Then, add animations to your first slide.
Consider the options for adding an animation to the object you selected.
Each option will cause the object you select to appear or disappear in a certain way.
Options that include the word “in” make objects appear and options with the word “out” make objects disappear.
Try different animations until you find one that you like, since the purpose of your animations is to add your own pace to your flash cards.
You can use the same animation to keep a consistent look.
Or you can animate different slide details with different animations for variety.
You can also choose how to present each animation.
Using the “click” option will give you full control over when each object appears.
The other options appear automatically before, after, or at the same time as another animation.
After you have formatted your animations, move on to the other vocabulary word slides and format any text that you want to animate separately.
If you have formatted all of these slides in the same way, you can use the same steps to animate them.
For your definition slides, you do not have to animate all of the text in a slide.
You can animate the definition only if you would like.
It is okay if your text appears different when you cut and paste it.
You can adjust it to make it look more organized.
Having only the definition animated will add an interactive element to your studying.
You can reveal the definition after you have guessed.
Continue adding animations to your definition slides.
You can use different options as you animate your definitions.
This might add an element of fun to your studying.
Or you can continue using the same pattern to keep your flash cards consistent.
Now, it’s your turn: Format the text in your slides using text boxes, And add and format animations in your slides.
