Add Slides with Definitions
Transcript
In this video, you will add slides for definitions and use the dictionary tool to find the definitions for your vocabulary words.
A dictionary is a useful resource when building your vocabulary.
Using a reliable dictionary allows you to find definitions for most words and helps you learn unfamiliar words quickly.
To begin, duplicate the slide with the first vocabulary word.
Then, use the dictionary tool to find the definition of your first vocabulary word.
If a word has more than one definition, use the context clues in the sentence to help you select the best definition.
Context clues are the other words surrounding an unfamiliar word that provide clues about the word’s meaning.
Add the best definition to the slide.
Replace the other slide details with the part of speech of the word.
Using the part of speech, or the way a word functions in a sentence, can also help you determine which definition to use.
Next, add emphasis to the vocabulary word.
Duplicate the rest of the vocabulary word slides and add the definition details to the new slides.
If a definition is long, use only the part of the definition that will help you understand the meaning of the word.
If the definitions in the dictionary tool do not match the way the word is used, use another source, such as a dictionary book.
You might have a vocabulary word where none of the definitions fit the context in the sentence.
For these words, you can rely on context clues to figure out the word’s intended meaning.
You can check with a partner or your teacher as well if you are unsure.
