In this lesson, you will create a collage featuring people or places that are significant to your culture or community.

A "collage" is a type of art that combines images and other elements onto one surface to convey one main idea in a creative way.

For this lesson, you will use your personal experiences from your culture or community to create a collage that highlights the people and places that have shaped you.

In your collage, you'll include images of places or cultural icons.

"Cultural icons" are people who help shape our communities and influence the way we connect with our cultures.

Take a moment to think about people you are inspired by or who you view as role models, like community leaders who reflect your values, scientists who have invented something special, or artists who you admire.

For example, Dolores Huerta is a cultural icon who is well known in some communities.

She was from Mexico and was an activist who fought for civil rights and fair labor.

She's had an impact even on people who don't know who she is.

By using images of cultural icons in your collage, you can help people learn about important aspects of your culture they may not know about.

As you complete this lesson, you will: create a collage, brainstorm cultural icons or places that are important to your culture or community, search for images online and insert them into your collage, and edit, organize, and label your images.

You might have created a collage out of magazine photos or other pieces of paper before.

For a digital collage, you'll use photos you'll find online.

Using a digital app gives you access to hundreds of different images instantly without having to search through magazines and newspapers.

This lesson uses Google Drawings, but you could apply these skills and concepts in any graphic design application.

Google Drawings is a free design app for building charts, graphics, and illustrations.

You can use it to format design elements, like images and text, in your collage.

Your collage will be saved in your Google Account, so you can access it from Google Drive.

When you're using Google Drawings, it might be helpful to use a screen reader.

If you have difficulty using a mouse, a screen reader could make it easier to interact with Google Drawings.

Click on the links next to this video to learn how to use this and other features.
